Takashi Murakami, or ‘the Warhol of Japan’, is one of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from post-war Asia. His distinctive work blends fine art with popular culture, and he is best known for his colourful, graphic anime and manga cartoon style.
Takashi is the leading figure of the Superflat art movement of the 1990s, which attempted to expose the ‘shallow emptiness of Japanese consumer culture.’ By using the familiar aesthetic of manga comics to make his art feel accessible, the artist intended to ‘denounce the universality and unspecificity of consumer goods.’
