Mixed-media artist, Mark Davies is known for creating striking compositions which apply his own narrative to that of beloved movies, fairy tales and fiction. Inspired by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and The Brothers Grimm, Davies likes to err on the side of the sinister, composing his pieces to further explore the darker themes underlying the stories we cherish.
In You Have No Power Over Me, Davies takes on the wonderful world of 80s fantasy musical, Labyrinth. The artist has created a dreamy piece, full of light, beauty and magic, but it’s the intricate details dotted around that encapsulate the film’s darker plot lines. By placing the observer at the bottom of the steps, the piece invokes the sense of being at the beginning of a vital and life-altering quest.
Additionally, the piece was created in homage to David Bowie, who starred in the film as the Goblin King. The cage represents the disease that eventually took his life, but the open door and owl in flight symbolise his passing and being free once more.
This print is from a limited edition of 45, signed by the artist.
