Since his career began in the 1950s, Sir Peter Blake has been prolific, creating paintings, collage, typography and more inspired by his fascination with popular culture. Blake’s impact on the face of contemporary art is so significant, he is now known as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art.’Â
This piece hails from Blake s 1991 Alphabet Series, which is inspired by people and objects who ve made their mark on British popular leisure culture.
Y for Yacht depicts a boat named Britannia that has colourful flags lining its rigging – another motif of much of Blake s work.
