Featuring ancient mythological beings, anatomical drawings, dream imagery and religious iconography, Dan Hillier is known for working with composite images and 19th-century engravings to create captivating, mystical works, blending Surrealism and Neo-Victoriana.

Built from digitally layered engravings of pastoral scenes, a moonlit house, path and ghostly figures are walled within the figure of a two-headed deity. In Roman mythology, the two-faced god Janus, presides over passages, doors, gates, transitions, beginnings and endings. From the mask-like faces, a mystical tree – like the Norse tree of life Yggdrasill – branches out into a starry sky. The effect is like a Russian doll, with unrealities neatly nesting within each other, from the tiny home at the centre, to the infinite imagined universe, and on to the real world beyond edge of the print.

This is a hand-pulled, signed and numbered silkscreen print from a limited edition of 100.
