Takashi Murakami is an acclaimed artist heralded as Japan’s answer to Andy Warhol.   Best known for his smiley flowers, his ‘superflat’ theory of art combines Japan’s love for cuteness with its traditional artistic styles and aesthetics.  

This piece brings together Murakami’s signature happy flowers with characters from Time Bokan, a Japanese animated series that aired in the 1970s.  

By combining imagery from the classic series with his favourite motif, Murakami continues his career-long exploration of how Japanese culture uses bright colours and innocent characters to mask the collective trauma experienced following Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 

This lithograph is from a limited edition of 300, signed and numbered by the artist.
