London-based artist, Gavin Mitchell reworks found objects, using photography, collage and print, to explore the relationship between East and West.
In Spacehopper II Mitchell adorns traditional photographs with contradictory imagery, to play with our perceptions of the Geisha lifestyle and to highlight the differences and similarities between Japanese and European culture. In this piece, Mitchell replaces the Geisha’s traditional clogs, which restrict the feet, with vintage roller skates, which grant freedom and movement.
This pigment print is finished with gold and metal leaf. It is from a limited edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist.
