Carl completed his BA in Art and Design at Bradford Art College whose alumni include artists David Hockney and Andy Goldsworthy. 

Carl s particular method of working produces heavily patinated mixed-media paintings involving the application of layer upon layer of overpainting, collage, and expressively scrawled and scratched marks. Despite the paintings seemingly disorderly jumble of chaotically strewn and scattered marks, doodles and illegible cryptic references, they are a coherent collection of exuberantly executed paintings exploring the interaction of texture, composition, form and palette.

The characteristics of Carl s particular approach to painting carries over from year to year in a creative process that embraces optimistic uncertainty and ordered chaos as a means of making work that is playful, bold and energetic.
