Growing up in China, Jacky Tsai was taught that skulls and anything related to death were unlucky. It was a desire to overcome this fear and subvert these traditional superstitions that led the artist to start experimenting with transforming skulls into objects of beauty.

By creating intricate skulls teeming with colourful flowers and wildlife, Tsai highlights the beauty in decay and explores regeneration, rebirth and the circle of life.

In Porcelain Skull, Tsai uses patterns from traditional blue and white Chinese porcelain to depict the features of the skull, combining dark and light blue to create striking contrast.
