Mixed-media artist, Mark Davies is known for creating striking compositions which apply his own narrative to that of beloved movies, fairy tales and fiction. Inspired by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and The Brothers Grimm, Davies likes to err on the side of the sinister, composing his pieces to further explore the darker themes underlying the stories we cherish.
One More Round is an homage to iconic Sylvester Stallone classic, Rocky. Set in Mickey’s gym, the stark and bloodied surroundings work as a comment on the struggle of having to fight your way out of the darkness.
The composition of the piece, and Davies’ use of light and props, hints that there is hope ahead. However, failure exists alongside victory – will the observer be able to resist picking up the bottle or the bat on their quest to make it to the top?
