Takashi Murakami is an acclaimed artist heralded as Japan’s answer to Andy Warhol.  Best known for his smiley flowers, his ‘superflat’ theory of art combines Japan’s love for cuteness with its traditional artistic styles and aesthetics.

In his piece, Murakami uses another motif seen across his oeuvre, the skull – a symbol he uses to explore the tragic reality of life in post-war Japan.

Similar to his smiling flowers, Murakami’s skulls allow him to explore the idea that joy and terror exist together, and are an inevitable part of human existence.

This silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 300, signed and numbered by the artist.
