London-based artist, Gavin Mitchell, reworks found objects using photography, collage and print, to explore the relationship between East and West.
This piece is from Mitchell’s East Meets West series, in which he pays homage to Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art, dating back to the 17th century, which explores themes of female beauty, erotica and folk tales.
Where the original pieces explored the increasingly hedonistic lifestyles of the merchant classes, Mitchell’s series considers the influence of western trends on the east. In this piece, his geisha enjoy a friendly game of Twister.
This piece is created with French Oak-edged board, collage, gold leaf, metal foil with UV protective varnish and a resin coat. From a limited edition of five, the piece is signed and numbered by the artist.
