This piece is from Hirst’s 2022 collection, H-10 The Empresses, which consists of five giclée prints of intricate patterns crafted from red butterflies.
Each artwork in the collection is named after a historical empress who played an important role in history. H10-1 Wu Zetian is named after a ruthless yet successful Chinese leader, who wiped out those that opposed her, before becoming an effective leader who stabilised the Tang Dynasty at a time when it appeared to be crumbling.
Butterflies are a repeat motif seen across Hirst’s oeuvre. He uses them to symbolise growth, change, life and death, but also to comment on the unique individuality that underpins the human experience.
This laminated giclée print on aluminium composite is screenprinted with glitter. From a limited edition of 2,853, and comes with a COA.
Size (cm): 100 x 100
