Peter Blake s fascination with typography dates back to 1949, when he first mastered typesetting and hand-lettering as part of his artistic studies at Gravesend Technical College. Ever since, much of his iconic portfolio has featured text, either as the star of the show, or as an integral part of a piece.
The Dazzle Alphabet Collection demonstrates Blake s interest in the dazzle effect , a method of camouflage used to help ships avoid enemy detection during World War One.
By covering ships with stripes and irregular abstract shapes reminiscent of the Cubist paintings of Picasso, it became decidedly more difficult for German U-boats to attack. The patterns Blake employs in this collection emulate those used back then.
This silkscreen print collection is from a limited edition of 100, with every piece signed and numbered by the artist.
