London-based artist, Gavin Mitchell reworks found objects using photography, collage and print, to explore his fascination with the duality of Japanese culture.
Explaining this piece, Mitchell reveals:
Japanese geisha hand-tinted postcards dating back to the 1900 s have been an important source for the inspiration for much of my recent work. When I first discovered the cards, I was struck by the crude nature of the hand-tinting which only became apparent once the images had been blown up. This inspired the gold and metal leaf hand-embellished layers that are a feature of my large-scale East Meets West prints. I have always wanted to produce a set of prints at the size of the original postcard.
From a limited edition of 30, these postcard-sized prints are hand-finished with gold and metal leaf, and come signed by the artist.
