Montague is from Charlotte Rose’s 2023 solo show curated by Enter Gallery, The Shakespeare Tobacco Company.

The show continues Rose’s exploration of the Machiavellian branding tactics used by companies to sell dangerous products. By evoking classic literature, Rose compares Shakespearean tragedy with the conflicts between cigarette company and consumer.

In Montague, Rose immortalises the House of Montague, one of the feuding families featured in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. By pairing this nod to the play with cigarette branding, Rose muses on the addictive effect of both love and tobacco.

This silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 15, and comes signed and numbered by the artist.
