Hope In Hell by contemporary artist Dan Baldwin is a stunning 22-colour silkscreen print, hand finished with glazes and diamond dust in a signed limited edition of 125.
Featuring images of Iraqi money, tanks, British and American flags, a palm tree, skulls and skeletons symbolising death and futility, this print – published in 2011 as US troops were finally withdrawn after 8 years of conflict – clearly references the war in Iraq.
However, the focus of Baldwin’s composition is one of hope and redemption through innocence. Christ-like, a child holds a lamb and is surrounded by birds, animals and smiling playmates. These symbols of innocence in the context of war are tragic, perhaps ironic, or perhaps articles of faith in humanity.
