Through his art Shepard Fairey is constantly urging observers to question the origin and intention of the images we see on a daily basis. Where Fairey uses star imagery, a symbol borrowed from Soviet propaganda, his work is intended to draw attention to the consequences of blind obedience.
This concept is conveyed in Mandala Ornament I, with Fairey exploring the Buddhist symbol of the mandala – a symbol traditionally used for spiritual practices, which has been co-opted by the wellness movement.
He states: ‘My work uses people, symbols, and people as symbols to deconstruct how powerful visuals and emotionally potent phrases can be used to manipulate and indoctrinate.’
This is a print printers proof of a limited edition of six, signed and numbered by the artist.
