This haunting piece of a Blue Whale is the creation of British artist, Louise McNaught. By presenting her subject in the type of bag we used to win goldfish in at the funfair, the artist invites the observer to confront their own complicity in the demise of this species.
Her chosen title, Baggage, is designed to draw attention to the plastic crisis and its devastating effect on the creatures that live in our oceans.
A version of this piece was originally created for McNaught’s 2016 show, Survival, featuring paintings of 20 endangered animals. The successful show was transformed into a book of the same name, published in 2018, in which her paintings are accompanied by facts about each animal’s plight and the efforts being made to save them.
The print is from a limited edition of 25, signed, numbered and embossed-stamped by the artist.
