Inferno is a framed lenticular by Damien Hirst. It is based on his Entomology Cabinet works, which take their name from phases and characters depicted in Dante Alighieri s tortuous vision of the afterlife, The Divine Comedy.
Much like his butterflies, the insects depicted in Inferno appealed to Hirst for their ability to maintain the appearance of life and beauty, even in death.
Discussing the work, Hirst reveals the painting is: ‘beautiful and horrific at the same time, you can’t help but be drawn into it, seduced by it, but you want to run away from it.’
From a limited edition of 50, the signature and edition number are etched on the reverse.
